English to French: Introduction to Romanticism. Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Source text - English The everyday and the exotic.
The attitude of the Romantics to the everyday, social world around them was complex. It is true that they advanced certain realistic techniques, such as the use of « local colours » (through down-to-earth characters, like Wordsworth’s rustics, or through everyday language, as in Emily Bronte’s northern dialects or Whitman’s colloquialisms, or through popular literary forms, such as folk narratives). Yet social realism was usually subordinate to imaginative suggestion, and what was most important were the ideals suggested by the above examples, simplicity perhaps, or innocence. Earlier, the 18th-century cult of the noble savage had promoted similar ideals, but now artists often turned for their symbols to domestic rather than exotic sources – to folk legends and older, « unsophisticated » art forms, such as the ballad, to contemporary country folk who used the « language of common men, » not an artificial « poetic diction, » and to children (for the first time presented as individuals, and often idealized as sources of greater wisdom than adults).
Translation - French Le quotidien et l’exotique.
French to English: Japanese national History. Detailed field: History
Translation - English The victory gained by the Minamoto clan opens a period at the end of the 12th century which witnesses simultaneously the erasure of the imperial power, reduced to its religious dimension, and the rise of the shogunal institution. The shogunal head of state is even established by Minamoto Yoritomo in Kamakura, Kanto, at a moment when the bushi warring class (the occidentals’ samuraïs) impresses itself as the main social force. Whilst the mongolian sovereigns’ authority, heirs of Gengis Khan, is on the march to spread across all of Asia, Japan will resist Emperor Yuan of Pekin’s demands and twice, in 1274 and 1281, the invading enemy fleets will be dispersed by the storm, thus ensuring the country’s independence. The following years see the strengthening of the imperial power, as showed by the return of the shogun in Kyoto in 1333, but the end of the 15th century, the said period of the « warring principalities », corresponds once again to the weakening of the central State. This evolution is shortly before the arrival of Europeans on the Archipelago’s shores-the Portuguese Mendes Pinto in 1542, the Navarrese Saint Francis Xavier in 1549- at the moment when the Portuguese settle in the Philippines and while Dutch and English traders begin to establish factories in the vicinity of Nagasaki. The end of the 16th century witnesses fierce power struggles, in the fight between Oda Nobunaga, Hideyoshi, true founder of the modern Japanese state, and Ieyasu Tokugawa whose lineage will eventually prevail. The country’s shutdown and the persecution of Christians mark the beginning of a long period of wilful isolation which will only end by the middle of the 19th century, when Americans, Englishmen and Russians demand the opening of the country by force. This is the opportunity for the new sovereign Mutsuhito to start a new era, allowing to victoriously take up the challenge of the foreign barbarians.
