In Indonesia, patent translations have been overly rigid and word-for-word. This is understandable since patents require precision. However, the linguistic aspects of patent translation should not be disregarded. Different languages have different grammatical structures, and an excessively rigid translation can cause more harm than good. Some examples of this issue are provided below. Unfortunately, this rigid approach has become the standard in Indonesia, leading many patent professionals to overlook the importance of linguistic accuracy. Patent professionals tend to forget that linguistic aspects play a crucial role in patent translation.
