» On the need for mediation in the translation industry
By Łukasz Gos-Furmankiewicz | Published 08/16/2013 | Business Issues | Recommendation:RateSecARateSecARateSecARateSecARateSecI
This article starts from a sober look at the lack of practicability of cross-border litigation of translation issues, especially small claims, and aims to convince the reader that mediation may be the better solution, as it saves a lot of costs, enables outside-the-box solutions and preserves relationships.
» Respecting others' time in the translation industry
By Łukasz Gos-Furmankiewicz | Published 08/11/2013 | Business Issues | Recommendation:RateSecARateSecARateSecARateSecARateSecI
Fitting for a Sunday, this article deals with an ethical issue. Hopefully without pontifications, though, the goal is to discuss a core a business ethics issue: respect for others' time. There have been problems with this in the translation world, and the most important one, in the author's opinion, is currently the artificial rush involved in some jobs. The author does not believe that ill intentions are involved there but wishes to stress that using embellished stories to make others work faster – and especially without being compensated additionally for the rush – comes very close to what we'd refer to as 'false pretences'. Which means a wake-cup call is in order.

Are the values underestimated or overestimated? Who’s doing which? And is there some happy medium at the heart of it all?

By Lucia Leszinsky | Published 01/16/2013 | Business Issues | Recommendation:RateSecARateSecIRateSecIRateSecIRateSecI
On a recent ProZ.com survey on disputes between service providers and outsourcers, 59.6% of professional translators (most of them with at least 5 years of experience in the translation industry) stated that they do request a PO with relevant and complete project details as a measure to prevent disputes with clients.
